Day 253 of Firsts: Blow the Shofar

Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family.  Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.  ~Jane Howard

It's Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and it's been tradition for us to join the family of Barb and Jerry Mark for holiday dinner.  They aren't blood family, but they sure feel like family to me.

Anyway, it's traditional to blow the shofar, (a ram's horn) in Temple for the New Year.  I'd been told it's not easy to do.  The Mark's had a couple that I got to try tonight for a first.

Mindy Wexler started us off . She shows the rest of us how it's done.  She says she used to play the french horn and that's why she got a decent noise out of it.  The rest of us sounded like we were sick elephants.

Check it out.  Shofar playing at the Mark's house.

L'shanah Tovah. May you have a happy and healthy new year.

  1. We have a teachable moment (if fleeting) to tell the story of Shofar. Its influence on prayer and its historical antecedents going back to the Temple sacrifices.

For full explanation, of Shofar, its influence on prayer and its historical antecedents going back to the Temple sacrifices.
