Day 332 of Firsts: Serve Dinner at a Shelter

Every other Saturday, for the last 25 years, three families have brought a homemade dinner to the Trinity Center men's shelter in Philadelphia.
When I asked the Burlings, Jacquettes, and the Quirins why they started this and why they continue , they just shrug and say "there are homeless people on the street."

It's just that simple to them. The men are appreciative. More than serving dinner, the families spend time chatting, getting to know the regulars.

I spoke to a man who told me he stays in the library when it's cold. It's nice in there he says because there are books he can read all day.  He couldn't really say why he's homeless. He says he doesn't want to be. He can't quite figure it out but a hot meal and a safe place to sleep is a blessing to him. 

I'm so grateful we were able to share this experience tonight.  I'm most grateful there are people like the Burlings, Jacquettes and Quirins. It's a better world because of them.
